Gutenachtgeschichte, or bedtime story, was conceived as we assumed isolation due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It was written not long after the very first 24 hour online performances by a multitude of musicians. I wanted to express what I thought performing musicians were feeling in their isolation from audiences. Going to bed seemed to be high on the list of activities especially in the earlier days of the pandemic (I listened to those first online performances from my bed!). Flügelhorn is the instrument I had in mind for this piece but any instrument in the family will work as the range is rather conservative.
This solo for flügelhorn should have a relaxed, free-flowing feeling; pauses may be exaggerated (or not) as the performer feels it will benefit their telling of the story.
